Ann Arbor residents will be able to keep chickens in their backyards "I'd like my children to understand where food comes from. This is Ann Arbor, we're different and we like it. We have dairies that deliver and community gardens. I'd would love to have this local food connection." - resident Jennifer Hall. City officials say it could take them up to 60 days to get a permit process in place, but after that the chickens that have captured the imagination of Ann Arborites can come home to roost. After hearing from more than 20 people - almost all "pro-chicken" - Monday, the City Council OK'd a plan that will let homeowners keep up to four hens in their backyards. It was a victory for Steve Kunselman, the 3rd Ward council representative who promoted an ordinance change that will end a longstanding ban on poultry. It was also a win for grass-roots activism: Although he worked on the language of the ordinance, Kunselman didn't politic for the plan. http://blog.mlive.com/annarbornews/2008/06/ann_arbor_residents_will_be_ab.html
